WHAT ABOUT YOUR SOUL?

 

  INTRODUCTION

That man is composed of spirit, soul and body is clearly taught in the sacred scriptures. Sometimes in scripture, the spirit and soul are used interchangeably. Man cannot empirically (through the senses) verify that he has a soul. No scientist can go to the laboratory and produce the soul. The soul is God-given and is not the origination of man. The only way man knows he has a soul is because God has revealed that aspect of man from His inspired word. Man has been placed on this earth to make his decision to where he will live forever. He is in a “probationary” period and must make his decision now to where his soul will spend in eternity.

The Bible teaches the word “soul” is a generic term and has about four different senses in its usage. However, in this tract, I will be using it in the sense of the inner man, the spirit which dwells in the fleshly body and survives death.

THE VALUE OF YOUR SOUL: There are many things that we place tremendous value on. These “things” capsules man’s attention and reason for living. Many people feel in the absence of material things or the loss of those things that life is not worth living. However, the Bible teaches us that the things of this world are only temporal and will one day be destroyed (2 Peter 3: 10). Jesus gave us the right perspective of the value of the soul in contrast to the things of this world when asked: “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul” (Matthew 16: 26)? The soul is priceless! There is nothing in any amount worth the losing of one’s soul. There is nothing so great of value that you should give in exchange for your soul. But the chase of this world’s goods goes on to the neglect of the one thing that will last forever. God’s people, Christians, are not immune or exempt from the questions asked. In the Parable of the sower, Jesus describes the foolish pursuit, the “exchange” for the soul in the following: “Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful” (Matthew 13: 22).  If you have placed those things as a priority in your life, I ask: “What About Your Soul?”

THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF YOUR SOUL: Because the soul derives its existence from God, we will one day have to give account for our soul in how we have lived in this body. “For we must all appear before the Judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5: 10). There is the frightening responsibility to secure our souls for good in this life.

In Luke chapter 12, we are introduced to a “certain rich man” (Luke 12: 16-21). This man, according to worldly standards, was very successful. He astutely prepared himself for his future. However, his mistake was three-fold. (1) He thought he knew the future. He said, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years…”; (2) He put his soul on vacation. He said, “And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry’” (vs. 19). God does not give the soul a vacation! (3) He left God out. “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (vs. 20-21). That night, his soul was “required” of him. He would now give account for his soul in that he was not rich toward God. Sadly, many have been caught in the same trappings as this rich fool. He planned for his future; but he did not plan for his eternity. There is coming a day when our souls will be “required.” If your life is lived in neglect of the most important matters, I ask: “What About Your Soul?”

THE DEPARTING OF YOUR SOUL: One day we will all give up this body to mother earth in death. The sobering thought of death is a subject no one likes to talk about. But the fact is, our bodies grow old and decay and we eventually die. But the soul never dies. As Rachel was giving birth, the scriptures describe her death. “And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin” (Genesis 35: 18). The scriptures declare that the body without the spirit is dead (James 2: 26). Solomon summarized, “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12: 7). When the body dies, it will be buried; but the soul will go on to live forever. In the book of Revelation, there were those who had died for their faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. John writes: “…I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?’” (Revelation 6: 9-10). Notice: John saw those souls who had been slain. And, those souls cried out saying… Their souls had departed but they were alive and well. Life ending does not end the soul. If you think this life is all there is, I ask: “What About Your Soul?”

THE DESTINY OF YOUR SOUL: In Luke chapter 16, God unveils the curtain of what happens to us after we die in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Immediately after death, they found themselves still alive and conscious of their former lives. The rich man found himself in torment (vs. 23); Lazarus was in comfort (vs. 25). We will be in one of two places. And, wherever we end up, it will be forever. On that great Judgment scene, Jesus talks about the two places that man will go. “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25: 46). The Bible speaks of those two places as heaven and hell. To the righteous souls, Jesus said, “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5: 12). To the wicked souls, Jesus said, “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell” (Matthew 23: 33)? Further, Jesus said, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10: 28). Man, in his pursuit of life, is headed in all directions. But one day, the soul will be headed to its destiny. If your destiny is just the seeking of pleasures in this life, I ask: “What About Your Soul?”

CONCLUSION:

Dear friend, will you please consider the grave importance given to the matter of your soul? The Bible teaches: “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9: 27). Will you in light of Bible teaching make your life right with God? By obeying God and entering His church (Acts 2: 38; Matthew 16: 18), and living righteously and godly in this life (Titus 2: 12-13), will result in our dying right to forever be with the Lord (Revelation 14: 13). With a sincere prayer, I ask you to consider these matters.

INTRODUCTION

The group known as the “Jehovah Witnesses” (herein referred to as JW’s) is clearly identifiable as they walk the streets in their evangelistic efforts. Their evangelistic efforts are known throughout the country and their passion to win converts to what they believe to be the true religion of God. However, the JW’s are a cult (I say that kindly) masking as a pious and God-fearing people with the message of salvation. But, upon further review, this group goes contrary to plain passages of scripture with blasphemous claims. Jesus told us to beware of false prophets in sheep clothing (Matthew 7: 15). Jesus also told us that the truth will make us free (John 8: 32). The JW’s teach error. Therefore, the error of the JW’s has led and is leading millions to eternal ruin.

The official Watchtower group invites others to examine the truth and has correctly observed:

If a religion is not in accord with what the Bible teaches,

then it is not in harmony with the truth, it is not the true

religion (Rom. 3: 4). You have nothing to fear in

examining your beliefs by the standard of God’s Word,

for if you have the true religion you can only be reassured.

And if what you believe is not in keeping with the Bible,

then you should welcome the truth, because it leads to

eternal life. (Watchtower 1 July 1968: 389)

My purpose in this tract is to do the very thing they call on you to do and expose some of the fallacious doctrines taught by this movement—not to simply disagree—but to challenge those doctrines—“When They Knock On Your Door.”

WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR: Ask them why they do not believe in the Trinity. JW’s are very bold to point out that the Bible does not teach the doctrine of the Trinity. They joke at the statement that there are three personalities in One and are quick to mention that the word “Trinity” never appears in the Bible. However, their lack of comprehension is something they need to go work on. And, though the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible, the concept and definition of the word is clearly revealed in scripture. When we say God, we are talking about divine nature or essence. There is one divine nature or essence. God (the divine nature or essence) eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is but one God. Though the finite mind cannot grasp the profundity of God’s essence, we should welcome it because God teaches us the truth about His nature. The JW’s do not argue about God the Father, they believe He is one and the only one. The scriptures are plain in that God the Father called Jesus God. “But unto the Son He says: ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever…Therefore God, Your God has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions’” (Hebrews 1: 8-9). The Holy Spirit is God. The JW’s teach the Holy Spirit is God’s active force. But the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is a Person. In Acts 13: 2, 4 we read, “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabus and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” “So being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.” As for God, the Bible teaches: “But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit…You have not lied to men but to God’” (Acts 5: 3-4). We are baptized into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28: 19). The Bible clearly teaches the triune nature of God. Something to ask them: When They Knock On Your Door.

WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR: Ask them why they do not believe in the Deity of Christ. When it comes to the nature of Christ, the JW’s teach that Christ was a created being and thus not God. However, the Bible plainly teaches that Jesus is God. When I say God, I am not talking about the Father, but that Jesus is co-eternal and possesses the same divine nature as the Father. In John we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God” (John 1: 1-2). Later, John writes, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” (John 1: 14). To avoid this death blow, they insert the indefinite article before it, “a god” in their perverted “New World’s Translation.” Thomas declared that Jesus was God, not a god as they teach. “And Thomas answered and said unto Him, ‘My Lord and my God’” (John 20: 28)! The JW’s are not fair with the Greek text. None of the translations or Greek texts insert “a” as they have done so they change their Bible to fit their ideologies. Finally concerning Christ being God (Deity) notice this scripture: “Therefore, take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20: 28). The passage affirms that God shed His blood for the church. This then means that the One who shed His blood for the church is God. Who shed His blood for the church? Jesus did (Matthew 26: 28)! Therefore, Jesus is God!  Something to ask them: When They Knock On Your Door.

WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR: Ask them why they do not believe that man is made of both body and soul. The JW’s teach that man does not possess a soul but is a soul. Therefore, they deny the soul of man as a separate entity from the body. Jesus said, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10: 28). This passage makes absolutely no sense if man is just a soul; for it mentions both soul and body being destroyed. James wrote, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2: 26). James is saying, what this is on the one hand, this is on the other. Without the spirit there is no life in the body. Without works there is no life in faith. James uses both faith and works to produces life. James uses both body and spirit to produce life. Then, Jesus said, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26: 41). Something to ask them: When They Knock On Your Door.

WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR: Ask them why they believe only “144,000” are going to heaven. The JW’s are skilled experts in interpreting figurative passages to be literal and making plain passages figurative. They take the 144,000 from the book of Revelation in chapters 7: 4 and 14: 1, 3. If taken literally in chapter 7, then you have only Jews of the tribes of Israel which would exclude all Gentiles. If taken literally in chapter 14, then these would all be men who were never married which would exclude many of God’s faithful men. However, even the JW’s are not consistent with their literal interpretation for they say some of the 144,000 can be women! A casual reading of the scriptures refutes this doctrine. Jesus said, “And I say to you that many will come from the east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 8: 11). Now what is the significance of this? Jesus said Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would be in heaven. But, from their literal interpretation, consistency demands the exclusion of these patriarchs because they were never of the “tribes” of Israel! Further, if literally pressed, not a soul from Ephraim or Dan will enter, for they are excluded from the list which means heroes as Joshua (from Ephraim) and Samson (from Dan) will be excluded. And, just the very next verse in Revelation 7: 9, we have, “After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.’”  This is the trouble the JW’s find themselves in when they pervert the scriptures. The clear facts are that heaven is for all the obedient. The obedient have their names written in heaven, which means they are “enrolled” there (Luke 10: 20; Hebrews 12: 23). Those who forsake all to follow Jesus are promised treasure in heaven (Matthew 19: 21). Christ would have us to rejoice when we are persecuted, for great is our reward in heaven (Matthew 5: 12). Our inheritance is “reserved in heaven” for us (1 Peter 1: 4). Something to ask them: When They Knock On Your Door.

WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR: Ask them why they do not believe in the doctrine of hell. JW’s deny the fundamental doctrine of hell. It is inconceivable to them that God would punish someone eternally. But contrary to belief, the doctrine of hell is alive and not so well. To the wicked, Jesus says, “Depart from Me, you cursed into the everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels…And these shall go away into everlasting punishment” (Matthew 25: 41, 46). According to Revelation 20: 10, the wicked “…shall be punished day and night for ever and ever.” Paul writes about the coming of the Lord, “…in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord…” (2 Thessalonians 1: 8-9). The story of the rich man and Lazarus proves the doctrine of eternal existence. Do not let them (JW’s) tell you this is a parable, for it does not say it is. This story says “a certain rich man” and calls Lazarus by name. Even if it were a “parable” parables teach the truth. Therefore, if it is historical, it has happened; if a parable, it shows what will happen. This narrative proves the existence and consciousness after death and how the rich man was in eternal “torment” (See Luke 16: 19-31). Finally, Jesus says, “So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13: 49-50). Something to ask them: When They Knock On Your Door.

CONCLUSION

Space forbids me to go into other erroneous doctrines of the JW’s. They teach error about the Trinity; the bodily resurrection of Christ, blood transfusions, the kingdom, baptism is not for the forgiveness of sins and many other things. This religious group needs to be exposed and confronted with their damning beliefs. We invite your study on these matters and invite the JW’s to put to test their doctrines under the scrutiny of the Bible.

INTRODUCTION:

One of Satan’s greatest strategies is to offset God’s truth by way of counterfeit. The devil knows that truth is here; so, his only means is to employ someone or something to disguise truth as much as he can. Jesus said false prophets would “appear’ in sheep clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves (Matthew 7: 15). Paul said that Satan “transforms” himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11: 14). Jesus says again, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7: 21).  

This “appearance” and “transformation” is very popular with the name “Christian.” In Biblical parlance the name Christian had a definite and distinguished meaning to first century followers. However, Christendom is now defined as “believers” who accept the basic tenants of Christianity as opposed to world religions and godless philosophies. In this tract, we would go back to Bible teaching on the name Christian and those who were identified as such. The following was written to arrest your attention to the claim multitudes are making in being a Christian.

CHRISTIANS WERE PROPAGATED. Very early in the Bible we learn of the law of propagation. “And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind…” (Genesis 1: 12). We learn from this passage that every seed produces after its own kind. You cannot plant tomato seed and bring forth apples. You cannot plant watermelon seed and bring forth oranges. Humans are begotten by humans. Monkeys produce after their own kind and bring forth monkeys. Its all in the seed.

In the spiritual realm the Bible teaches us that the seed is the word of God (Luke 8: 11). So, whatever the seed produces, will bring forth its kind every time. The word of God (the seed) will bring forth a Christian and a Christian only. You cannot plant the word of God and produce any denomination in the world because the seed must produce after its own kind. The word of God will not produce Baptist; it takes Baptist seed to make one a Baptist. The word of God will not produce so-called “Jehovah Witnesses”; it takes “Jehovah Witnesses” seed to make one a “Jehovah Witnesses” etc.  The word of God conspicuously mentions no denominations because the seed will not produce such. Whenever you plant the “seed” (the word of God) into honest hearts you will have Christians and Christians only.

CHRISTIANS WERE DESIGNATED. While we acknowledge that God’s people were designated by various names in the Bible, we deny that they were given any of the modern man-made names today. No one was an “Episcopalian”; no one was a “Methodist”; no one was “Catholic”; no one was a “Baptist” etc. As a matter of fact, Paul condemned the Corinthians for calling themselves after men (1 Corinthians 1: 12). Three times in the sacred scriptures God’s people were called Christians. (1) “…And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11: 26). Many believe this name was given in derision; however, we believe this name was prophesied in the long ago: “The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, And all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, Which the mouth of the Lord will name” (Isaiah 62: 2). The Jews of old and God’s people today were on equal footing so far as names were concerned except one. The new name is Christian. (2) “Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You almost persuade me to become a Christian’” (Acts 26: 28). Agrippa was not almost persuaded to be a “Presbyterian” or a “Lutheran.” Neither was Agrippa a hyphenated “Christian,” e.g., a Baptist “Christian.” He was almost persuaded to be a Christian and only a Christian. (3) “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name” (1 Peter 4: 16). Peter instructed the sufferers to suffer as Christians. Never at one time were they to suffer as any of the man-made names given today. God’s people were designated by the name Christian as a follower of Christ.

CHRISTIANS WERE LOCATED.  If Jesus built His church (and he did) “…and on this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16: 18), and if the saved are in His church (and they are) “…And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2: 47), and if the saved are identified as Christians (and they are) “…And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11: 26), then the Christians are in the church of Christ (Romans 16: 16). Jesus has no children outside of His family. Paul wrote, “but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3: 15). Christians are located in the “house of God” which is the church of Christ. None others who have not heard the gospel, believed, repented of their sins, confessed their faith in Christ, and been baptized for forgiveness of their sins are located in the church of Christ. Christians are not located in denominations started and built by men; but in the church Jesus built.

CHRISTIANS WERE CREATED. Paul wrote, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2: 10). The Christian life is one of activity. The Bible teaches that faith without works is dead (James 2: 26). Yet, those works must be the works of God: “But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10: 35). The Christian busies him/herself with the good works of teaching and preaching the gospel to the lost (Mark 16: 15-16); worshipping in Spirit and truth (John 4: 24); defending the truth when under attack (Jude 3); being benevolent to the needy (Galatians 2: 10); doing good to all men, especially those who are of the household of faith (Galatians 6: 10); practicing pure and undefiled religion (James 1: 27). However, good works can only be accomplished by those who have been propagated by the “seed” (the word of God) in producing a Christian; by those who are designated by the name Christian; and by those who are located as Christians into the one church (church of Christ) which He built.

INTRODUCTION:

The subject of baptism has called no small stir in the religious community. The subject is a non-ending one that will always warrant our attention. Some believe baptism to be no more than an “outward sign of an inward grace.” In other words, baptism is not essential to salvation. Then, concerning the mode, there are those who believe baptism can be administered through sprinkling, pouring, or being dipped in water. In other words, there is choice in the matter. However, baptism is a burial (immersion) as taught in Romans 6: 4. Still, others believe that baptism is a moot point altogether. In other words, they have “cast side” the subject of baptism from religious discussion.

In this tract, we purpose to set forth the truth on the subject. The Bible plainly teaches us the scripturalness of baptism. It behooves the reader to examine the scriptures in light of what the Bible teaches on this crucial subject.

THE AUTHORITY BEHIND IT.  On a certain night, Nicodemus came to Jesus acknowledging Him being a teacher from God because of the great signs He had done. Jesus immediately tells Nicodemus the necessity of being “born again.” “…Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3: 3). Again, Jesus said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3: 5). And, emphatically, Jesus said: “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again’” (John 3: 7). Jesus left no doubt about His authority behind being “born again.”

Prior to His ascension back to the Father, He said: “All authority has been given unto Me in heaven and on earth, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28: 18-19). And, the apostles obeyed and understood from whence the authority came when they declared that baptism was “in the name [or authority] of Jesus Christ” (Acts 2: 38). Jesus Christ is the author of baptism and no man in any generation can usurp His authorship in saying it is not so. If the authority is not from the Lord, then you were not scripturally baptized…but just got wet.

THE COMMAND FROM IT. On the great Day of Pentecost in Act chapter 2, the apostles preached the first gospel sermon in fact. At the concluding of the sermon, their hearers were “pricked in their hearts” and asked what they needed to do. Peter (and the rest of the apostles) told them to “repent and let every one of you be baptized …” (Acts 2: 38). These inspired men had their authority from the Lord and commanded all those present to be baptized. They (the apostles) did not give them a choice if they wanted to be saved.

At the house of Cornelius, the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles proving to Peter and those accompanying with him that the Gentiles were proper recipients of salvation as were the Jews. Peter, without further delay, “…commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord…” (Acts 10: 48). In every conversion in the New Testament, baptism was never optional but commanded. If in being baptized it was not commanded, then you were not scripturally baptized…but just got wet.

THE ELEMENTS IN IT.  In the book of Ephesians, Paul wrote that there is now one baptism (4: 5). So, whatever is the one baptism, it is now for everyone for all times. The Bible mentions about several baptisms; but there is now one scripturally authorized baptism today. Many believe this baptism to be the Holy Spirit baptism accompanied with the miraculous. This can not be so because the miraculous has ceased. The one baptism of Ephesians 4: 5 involves water and Spirit per John 3: 3-5. At the house of Cornelius, the Bible teaches Peter’s response to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles. “The Peter answered, ‘Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized…’” (Acts 10: 47). The eunuch of Acts chapter eight said, “See here is water” (Acts 8: 36). We read: “…And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. Now when they came up out of the water…” (Acts 8: 38-39). The one baptism also consists of the Holy Spirit but in a non-miraculous way. Jesus said born of “water and the Spirit” (John 3: 5; 1 Corinthians 12: 13). This is the Lord’s doing (Matthew 3: 11) and takes place simultaneously in the water (Titus 3: 5). This is why Peter preached the reception of the Holy Spirit after forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  So, those who become Christians are baptized in water and in Spirit (non-miraculous) which is the one baptism of Ephesians 4: 5. If in being baptized you were not baptized in the scriptural elements, then you were not scripturally baptized…but just got wet.

THE PURPOSE OF IT.  Perhaps, no greater controversy exists concerning baptism than the purpose of it. If people are going to submit to baptism, they are taught it is not for the purpose God intended—to be saved. However, the controversy lies with men and not with God. God has already settled the matter and the Bible gives us His revelation on the purpose of being baptized.

In Marks’ account of the gospel, Jesus said: “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved…” (Mark 16: 16). Jesus plainly tells us the purpose of being baptized, i.e., for salvation. Peter minced no words on the Day of Pentecost when he said: “…Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” (Acts 2: 38). In his first epistle, Peter did not equivocate concerning the purpose: “…while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…” (1 Peter 3: 20-21).

Baptism puts you into Christ. “Faith” is unto (Romans 10: 10); “repentance is unto (Acts 11: 18); confession is unto (Romans 10: 10); but baptism is into. It is baptism that is the final step of transition, the step that takes one from without to within. Note carefully: “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3: 26-27).  Now, what were these people? “Sons of God.” How did they become what they were? Through the faith. Where are they located? In Christ Jesus. How did they get into Christ Jesus? “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ, did put on Christ.” If there is no baptism into Christ, there is no putting on Christ.

And, finally, the purpose also puts us into the church of Christ. Paul wrote: “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…” (1 Corinthians 12: 13). But the one body is the church: “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church” (Colossians 1: 24). Can one be saved without getting into Christ? No. Can one get into Christ without being baptized? No. Can one be saved without putting on Christ? No. Can one be saved without being in His church (Matthew 16: 18)? No. Therefore, if in being baptized you were not baptized to be saved, for the remission of your sins (the right purpose), into Christ (the right person), to put on Christ (the right position), and into the church of Christ (the right place), then you were not scripturally baptized…but just got wet.

INTRODUCTION:

Generally speaking, most people who profess any religious affiliation believe the Bible to be the word of God. I write this piece with the presupposition of it being true. The differences lie perhaps in what version one may use and the interpretation of scripture. Interestingly, while most people profess their belief in the Bible, their doctrines come from the creeds and manuals of men. Or, with most, it is a failure to “rightly divide” the scriptures with the understanding that we now live in the New Testament era and under the authority of Jesus Christ.

Concerning matters of salvation, God has spoken with clarity the one message to save all men. If we are going to be saved, we must all be saved in the same manner. God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10: 34-35).  No one can create his/her own Bible to contradict the message God teaches. Whatever the Bible teaches, it teaches the same message for all. In this tract, the leading statement will be: “If We Believe The Bible”, followed by the simple and plain truths God has set forth in His word.

IF WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE…We will not accept the doctrine of faith only. The Bible teaches that while one must have faith (e.g., Hebrew 11: 6; Romans 10: 10; John 3: 16), faith only will not save anyone. Those who believe the Bible have been taught that salvation by faith only saves. But the Bible teaches that “faith without works is dead” (James 2: 14-26). No one has ever or will ever be saved by faith only. Jesus said, “He that believes [faith] and is baptized [works] shall be saved” (Mark 16: 16). Please pay careful attention to the conjunction “and” in the verse. If a person believes in the doctrine of “faith only” then that person implies salvation by a dead faith; for faith without works is dead. But salvation is not by a dead faith; therefore the doctrine of faith only is a false doctrine. The Bible teaches, “But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10: 35). Further, notice the teaching in John 1: 12. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God to those who believe in His name” (John 1: 12). Now, what does this passage teach the believer has the right to become? Answer: Children of God. Believers in Christ are not yet children of God; they have the right, they have the liberty of action to become children of God. You cannot become what you already are. You cannot become a child of your mother and father. You are already a child of your mother and father. Therefore, if believers have the right to become children of God, they are not yet children of God. The one and only time we find the language of faith only is found in James 2: 26 where the Bible teaches us, “You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.” There is not a single case in the New Testament where a person(s) were saved by faith only…If We Believe The Bible.

IF WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE… We will not accept the different “churches” in existence today. Today, there are hundreds of different denominations wearing different names and teaching different doctrines. These churches are conspicuously absent from the Bible. But notice the plain Bible teaching concerning the church. The Bible teaches that there is only one body (Ephesians 4: 4). The Bible teaches that the body is the church (Colossians 1: 24). Therefore, there is only one church. Christ promised He would build His church (Matthew 16: 18). Therefore, the one church is the church of Christ, i.e., the church that belongs to Christ. Christ adds the saved to the church (Acts 2: 47). Therefore, the church that Christ adds to is the one church that Christ built. Every person who obeys the gospel is added to the church of Christ for it is the only church in Bible where one can be saved and where the saved are located…If We Believe The Bible.

IF WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE…We will not accept the different, conflicting and contradictory doctrines taught by men from their different manuals and creeds. To the Jews of Jesus’ day, He quoted from Isaiah the prophet and said: “This people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15: 8-9). This principle is well and alive today. The Bible teaches that there is one faith (Ephesians 4: 5). This one faith is the system of faith which teaches one message. Paul wrote: “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1: 8). John wrote: “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son” (2 John 9). As we said in our introductory remarks, the majority of people—unknowingly—are following the creeds and manuals of men. Whatever the denomination, there is a creed or manual that makes them such. The Bible cannot and does not teach the conflicting and different doctrines that makes men denominationalist. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10: 17). Where there is no hearing there can be no faith; and where there is no word of God one cannot come to faith. The Bible teaches: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3: 16-17). The Bible and the Bible alone contains the saving message that all men must hear and heed…If We Believe The Bible.

IF WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE…Then we will not believe in what has been commonly called the “sinners’ prayer.” The great concern for all men is the salvation of their souls. Usually, at the concluding of the sermon, the preacher will extend the invitation to come and “accept Jesus in your heart.” What follows is the utterance of some form of what is called the “sinners’ prayer.” The Bible no where teaches such a prayer. No one has ever prayed their way into Christ.  In the book of Acts no one was ever found praying for salvation. The Bible teaches that baptism stands between the sinner and his sins being forgiven. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter told those hearers to “repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins” (Acts 2: 38). In Acts 9: 11, Saul of tarsus was praying and when Ananias came to him he said, “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22: 16). It was in the act of being baptized to wash away his sins that Saul was “calling on the name of the Lord.” Paul (formerly Saul) told the Galatians how they came into Christ. “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3: 27). In Acts chapter 8, The Ethiopian eunuch rejoiced after he was baptized (Acts 8: 39). In Acts chapter 10, Peter commanded them to be baptized (Acts 10: 47-48). In every case in the New Testament where sins needed remitting, baptism for the forgiveness of sins was called for. And is it not interesting that Christ can only come into the heart after one has been baptized? And he does this via the Holy Spirit per Acts 2: 38! The “sinners’ prayer” is not taught in the Bible nor was any sinner ever converted this way…If We Believe The Bible.

CONCLUSION:

The aforementioned mentioned matters come from an honest study of the scriptures. God enjoins all of us to be students of the Bible. To study our way into truth (2 Timothy 2: 15); and to be an honest seeker with an honest heart for the truth (Acts 17:11; Luke 8: 15). May God richly bless your sincere efforts to find and obey his truths as recorded in scripture.

INTRODUCTION:

In this great country of ours we have been the recipients of the benevolent hand of our loving Creator. God has and continues to bless America in spite of our moral decline as a nation. We have so much. And, it is this state that has brought us to our allegedly self-sufficiency, our deceived dependency on ourselves that has masked and blinded our need for God.

Because we are living in such an affluent society, “political correctness” is the norm of the hour. The things we need the most are thrown away into the sea of indifference. We are so afraid of consequences and the repercussions of “straight talk” that there is no longer an objective standard. Truth is no longer absolute but relative. Speaking the truth in love (i.e., love for the truth) is not synonymous with being mean-spirited or judgmental. Truth saves (John 8: 32). And Paul asks, “Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?” (Galatians 4: 16).  

The world at large is perishing to an eternal hell and the religious community is being duped by false teachers and preachers. God is going to one day call us into account for how we have lived our lives on this earth. There needs to be a restoration, resolution and renaissance of men and women recommitted to teaching and preaching Bible truth without fear, equivocation and/or ambiguity. We need men and women with strong voices for God with love in their hearts and truth on their lips to “Tell it Plainly.”

JESUS AND LAZARUS

In John chapter eleven, Jesus is told that his friend Lazarus was sick. He deliberately remains two more days in the place where He was that He might perform the miracle of raising him from the dead. In the conversation concerning Lazarus, Jesus uses the beautiful terminology of sleep in describing Lazarus being dead. However, the disciples did not grasp and understand for they said, “Lord if sleeps he will get well” (John 11: 12). Jesus, knowing their misunderstanding and with bluntness of speech clarifies. “Then Jesus said to them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead’” (John 11: 14).

What the world in general and the religious community in particular needs is for someone to “tell it plainly.” The following truths are “plainly” taught in the sacred scriptures and are put forth for your consideration and contemplation.

  1. MAN IS A SINNER. No one who is mentally sane and who has reached the age of accountability can escape this Bible truth of man being a sinner. “…There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3: 10). “For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin” (Ecclesiastes 7: 20). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3: 23). Sin is transgression of God’s law (1 John 3: 4). Your “goodness” falls short before the holy God. To “tell it plainly” you are a sinner in need of a Savior!
  2. JESUS CHRIST IS OUR SAVIOR. In a context of idols, Paul discusses the truth about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. However, there is not in everyone that knowledge…” (1 Corinthians 8: 5-7). Jesus Christ is the Savior of all men through His death and the shedding of His precious blood (Hebrews 2: 9). If man is to have access to the Father, it must be by Him (John 14: 6). “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4: 12). Yet, many people make the claim of being His disciple without following strict obedience to His word. We want the Savior but we want to put His Lordship on layaway. That will not work! Jesus said, “But why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say” (Luke 6: 46). To “tell it plainly” Jesus Christ is our Savior and you need to do what He says!
  3. THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS THE ONE AND ONLY CHURCH WHERE THE SAVED ARE. I know this may come off as dogmatic, but remember, we are talking about telling it plainly! When it comes to a doctor, I want a dogmatic doctor! When it comes to a pharmacist, I want a dogmatic pharmacist! When it comes to a pilot, I want a dogmatic pilot! Don’t you? Jesus promised to build His church. “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16: 18). There is not another man in the Bible who ever made such a statement. God did not leave it up to the whims of man to build His church. No man has the right to come along and start a “church” wearing a different name, teaching a different doctrine, with a different plan of salvation in the name of Christ. “…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2: 47). You cannot find one denomination in the entire Bible. If it is not authorized, then it is not recognized. To “tell it plainly” you cannot be saved unless you are in the church of Christ!
  4. MECHANICAL INSTRUMENTS OF MUSIC IN WORSHIP IS SIN. When it comes to the subject of worship, the masses have come to please themselves. They have not given much thought about what the Bible teaches concerning scriptural worship. Most people do not understand that worship is a matter of biblical authority (Colossians 3: 17). That authority can only come from Christ. Friend, is your worship authorized by God? Are you doing the things in worship that the Father seeks? Mechanical instruments of music in worship are an innovation by men. Man must worship God according to the divine pattern. “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father is spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4: 23: 24). The Bible teaches we are to sing and make melody in the heart. “…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…” (Ephesians 5: 19).

We are, today, living in the time of the New Testament. “In that He says, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away” (Hebrew 8: 13). Therefore, our authority is now Christ and the New Testament and not Moses and the Old Testament (cf. Matthew 17: 1-8). The New Testament authorizes us to sing.

To sing with mechanical instruments of music is an addition. The Bible condemns adding or taking away from the word of God. There is no authority to play mechanical instruments of music in worship. There is not one Bible passage that teaches such. To “tell it plainly” mechanical instruments in worship is a sin in worshipping God!

WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?

INTRODUCTION:

We are living in a religious world that is divided over a plethora of spiritual matters. To many, it does not matter that we are as long as we believe in the core doctrine of “belief” in Christ. This ignorance has given acceptance to the different churches in our world today. However, the prayer of Jesus for His followers is that we all be one (John 17: 20-21). And God has situated a place (His church) where that possibility exists.

With all of the different churches today, which church has God’s approval? Is one church as good as another? Does it make any difference? If a person denies the exclusivity, uniqueness, and the oneness of the church in the plan of God, then that person unintentionally implies that the death of Christ and the blood of Christ are non-essential. If the church is a by-product of man, then it does not matter what church one belongs to. However, if God is the author of the church, then it deserves our careful attention to its existence.

I send this tract forward in a loving and sincere plea that you (the reader) investigate these matters with an open mind and Bible to the answering of these questions. Peter wrote: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3: 15). Our leading question is: Why the Church of Christ….

BECAUSE IT IS THE BIBLE CHURCH. On one occasion Jesus was questioned about His authority and He in turned asked about the baptism of John if it were from heaven or from men (Matthew 21: 24). The question put His antagonist in a dilemma and they could not answer. If it were from heaven then it had divine authority. If it were from men then it did not have God’s approval. The church of Christ is the Bible church. It is the only church in the New Testament with God’s approval (Romans 16: 16). There is not one denomination (church) ever mentioned in the Bible. Every denomination was started by some man therefore without God’s approval. If you cannot find your church in the Bible, then it cannot be the Bible church. The church of Christ is the one and only church in the Bible.

BECAUSE IT IS THE CHURCH JESUS BUILT. After Peter had confessed Christ to be the Son of God, Jesus utters a world-wide sweeping truth about His church. “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16: 18). The Bible plainly teaches that Jesus would build His church. The church belongs to Christ. If Jesus built His church (and He did) then the church would obviously wear His name. The name “church of Christ” shows ownership to the builder. The fact that Jesus built His church is proof that every denomination was built by some man. But the Bible teaches, “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it…” (Psalm 127: 1). This passage is applied in principle to the building of His church. The church of Christ is the one and only church built by Jesus.

BECAUSE IT CONSISTS OF THE SAVED. Throughout the Bible God has located salvation. In Noah’s day it was in the ark (Genesis 6: 18). On one occasion God located salvation in Rahab’s house (Joshua 2: 17-19). On yet another, it was in the six cities of refuge (Numbers 35: 25-28). In the New Testament, God has put salvation in His church. “…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2: 47). From this passage of scripture, the Bible teaches that the saved are in the church of Christ. We note from this passage: (1) The person was the Lord (2) It was the Lord who added (3) It was the Lord who added to the church (4) Those being added were being saved in the church the Lord was adding to. If the Lord adds to the church and if salvation is in the church, then no one can be saved outside of the church. We have already studied that that church is the church of Christ. The Lord would not build His church and add people to something else. If a person has not been added to the church by the Lord, then that person is not saved. Men “join” denominations (churches) but the Lord “adds” to His one church. And, the saved are in the one church. Further, the saved were redeemed by the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1: 18-19). The saved are in the church of Christ bought by the blood of Christ (Acts 20: 28). Therefore, denominations are individuals not redeemed by the blood of Christ and are not bought by the blood of Christ because they are not in the church of Christ. The church of Christ is the one and only church that consists of the saved.

BECAUSE IT IS THE CHURCH JESUS IS COMING BACK FOR. When the Lord descends from heaven for His final coming, He will come back to destroy this earth and to receive His people (1 Thessalonians 4: 16-18). In 2 Timothy 2: 19 we read, “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The lord knows those who are His, and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.’” Those who name the name are members of His church. Further, the Bible teaches the Lord is coming back for His church with expectation. “…that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5: 27). The Lord is not coming back for unauthorized “churches” started by men (cf. Matthew 15: 13). But He is coming back for His church. The church of Christ is the one and only church that Jesus is coming back for.

CONCLUSION:

Much confusion exists in Christendom concerning the church. Mainstream religion teaches that the church is composed of all denominational bodies who identify themselves as believers in Christ. In contrast, the Bible teaches that those who obey heaven’s plan of salvation constitute members of His church. The church does not consist of different denomination bodies teaching different doctrines in opposition and contradiction of each other.   

We pray for you honest inquiry on the aforementioned matters. It is not our purpose to demean, offend, or question your sincerity in your religious beliefs. However, we know the Bible to be the final authority in all religious matters and will one day judge us by what we have done in this life (John 12: 48). It has been my objective to set forth as clearly, concisely, and understandably what the Bible teaches along this line. Please study these matters objectively and as dispassionately as possible. We solicit your questions and pray for your search of the truth.

INTRODUCTION:

In John’s gospel, John begins with the Deity of Jesus and identifies Him as “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1: 29). We are then given details of the gathering of His (Jesus) soon to be disciples. When Philip found Nathaniel and told him they had found “Jesus of Nazareth” (vs. 45), Nathaniel’s reply was “can any good thing come out of Nazareth” (John 1: 46)? Philip’s reply was, “Come and See” (vs. 46).

In today’s religious community, there are many claims and promises made regarding scriptural positions held and long standing Bible beliefs and practices. However, when carefully examined, the truth seeker is left void of any substantiation of the claims made. When Philip asked Nathaniel to “come and see,” he was calling for Nathaniel to come and examine the evidence for himself and to make a fair and unbiased decision based on the evidence. It is our same desire as we extend this warm invitation to you to come and investigate our claim of being the Lord’s church based on the evidence—which in this case would be the sacred scriptures.   

COME AND SEE—Scriptural book, chapter, and verse Bible teaching and preaching. Much of the religious messages today are filled with good stories or a health and wealth gospel. Others, who may reference the Bible, do not get to the “meat” of the matter of things necessary to your salvation. This is because the foundation was started by the creeds of men. Distinctive, Bible preaching is lost in a world craving for their “felt needs.” But the Bible teaches that God’s word must be preached! Paul wrote to the young preacher Timothy, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4: 2-4). It is obvious from this passage that not only does Paul promote the soundness of preaching, but also the attitudes of the hearers. If you desire sound, rightly divided book, chapter, and verse Bible preaching, “Come and See.”

COME AND SEE—Scriptural worship in “Spirit and in Truth.” To the church at Corinth, Paul wrote concerning their gathering: “Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse” (1 Corinthians 11: 17). Unfortunately, many “churches” are coming together for the worse. When God’s people assemble for worship, they are to worship in “Spirit and in truth.” But many come together for entertainment. Many have turned the worship hour into their hour. John writes, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4: 23-24). Worship is the sacred privilege and obligation to pay homage to God. How sad that men have turned worship to themselves. The text involves: (1) True worshippers. This implies there are false worshippers. (2). The Father is seeking true worshippers. God will not tolerate just any and everything. (3). True worshippers “must” worship in “Spirit and in truth.” There is a divine pattern that we must follow prescribed in Gods word which includes: Preaching (2 Timothy 4: 2); Praying (Acts 2: 42); The Lord’s Supper (Acts 20: 7; 1 Corinthians 11: 23-29); Giving (1 Corinthians 16: 1-2; 2 Corinthians 9: 6-7); Singing (Ephesians 5: 19; Hebrews 2: 12). To be God’s people one must love God enough to do what He commands. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14: 15). If you are looking for scriptural worship in “Spirit and truth,” “Come and See.”

COME AND SEE—Scriptural fellowship. In Acts chapter 4, it was said about the Christians in Jerusalem. “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common” (Acts 4: 32). This congregation of Christians were so united that the things they possessed was no longer considered their own but they now had a deep and grounded love and concern for their brothers and sisters in Christ. They obeyed Peter’s words found in 1 Peter 3: 8-9 to be “…of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” They wore no titles of hierarchy distinguishable from one another, but served in scriptural roles for the up building of the kingdom. There were no selected “seats” in the assembly. But they worked and served together within their abilities with love for one another and for lost souls. The Bible teaches us to “…walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with long suffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4: 1-3). We acknowledge our imperfections and therefore we put on, “…mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you must also do” (Colossians 3: 12-13).  It was said about them: “So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2: 46-47). If you are looking for scriptural fellowship, “Come and See.”

CONCLUSION:

Dear friend, your soul is your most precious possession you have. It will survive death and go on to spend eternity in either heaven or hell. It behooves all of us to take the necessary time to investigate what we have been taught and what we believe.  To be religious and God fearing is not sufficient. We must obey the truth in order to be finally saved when this life is over (cf. John 8: 32; 1 Timothy 2: 4). The Bible invites your investigation to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5: 21). It is to this end that we are prayerfully blessed with your presence—not to take our word, but to “Come and See.”

INTRODUCTION:

The Bible as a book is an empirical fact. We can see it; we can hold it. It comes in differing bindings and styles. We are so proud of our Bible that we often engrave our name on the cover. But while the aesthetics of the Bible are pleasant to the eye, the Bible as a book is not what we should be concerned about. Moreover, because of technological advancements, we now carry our Bibles on our smart phones and laptops. With the ease of just a few swipes, we’re scripture ready! Whether it’s our binding book or our smart phones, it is the information contained therein that’s important. James wrote, “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1: 21).  The information is to be received which results is the salvation of the soul.

Shortly before Jesus ascended back to heaven, He gave direct orders to his apostles to take this information to the entire world. “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned’” (Mark 16: 15-16). The gospel is the information that gives man his only hope in this life to be at peace with God when he dies. In this tract, I want to set forth the importance and imperativeness of the gospel being preached, believed, obeyed, and the great result of being saved.

THE GOSPEL PREACHED: When Jesus gave the command to go and preach the gospel, He specifically identified the message that was to be preached. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel…” (Mark 16: 15). The gospel literally means good news. The good news is that Jesus came to this earth, lived a sinless and perfect life, died for all men, was buried, and resurrected on the first day of the week. Within that message there are facts to believe, commands to obey, and promises to receive. It (the gospel) is the one and only message that is to be preached. Paul wrote, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him…to a different gospel…But if we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1: 6-8). Men today should recognize this warning and preach the gospel and the gospel only for it is the message that the Lord sent forth. The gospel must be preached!

THE GOSPEL BELIEVED: This gospel is to be believed. Jesus said, “He who believes…” (Mark 16: 16). There are many messages believed today; and unless it is the gospel, men will perish in perdition. Man must believe the gospel because as the Bible teaches, “So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10: 17). Where there is no hearing (of the gospel) there can be no faith (believing). But faith (believing) comes by the word of God (the gospel). And men must be sure that what they are hearing is the gospel and then believe the message therein. In 2 Corinthians 5: 7, the Bible teaches, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” To walk by faith or belief means we take God at His word. But His word is the gospel. So, if there is no faith (belief) we cannot walk. And where there is no gospel there can be no faith. The gospel must be believed!

THE GOSPEL OBEYED: In John 12: 42-43 we find a sad statement in the Bible. “Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” It obvious from this text that there were believers; however, it is just as obvious that belief was not sufficient, for it did not move them to confess Christ. Belief affords one the opportunity, the right to become a son of God. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1: 12). Jesus said, he who believes and is baptized…” (Mark 16: 16). In this passage, salvation results from belief plus baptism. You cannot have one without the other. Many believe in the Christ, but refuse to do what He says. “But why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say” (Luke 6: 46). Further, the Hebrew writer wrote, “And having been perfected, He [Jesus] became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” (Hebrews 5: 8-9). If men and woman do not obey the gospel, eternal and devastating consequences await. “…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1: 7-9). The gospel must be obeyed!

THE GOSPEL SAVED: When the gospel is preached, believed, and obeyed, the wonderful and marvelous result is that the world can be saved. Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel…He that believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16: 15-16). How grave the matter of salvation is! Salvation should be the most important matter in one’s life. But sadly, many are well deficient when it comes to their salvation. The apostle Paul wrote and echoed the words of Jesus in his great resurrection chapter in 1 Corinthians 15, “Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel [the message] which I preach [the command] to you [the recipients], which you also received [believed] and in which you stand, by which also you are saved [the result], if you hold fast that word [the gospel] which I preach to you—unless you believed in vain” (1 Corinthians 15: 1-3). Paul also wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…” (Romans 1: 16). There is no other message that can save man. The gospel saves!

CONCLUSION:  

Dear friend, have you heard the gospel? Do you believe the gospel? Have you obeyed the gospel? Are you saved by the gospel? These are questions that you must honestly consider and answer for yourself based on the gospel. Paul wrote concerning the gospel, “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith’” (Romans 1: 17). In the gospel we find the church that Jesus built that wears His name. “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16: 18).   “Greet one another with a holy kiss the churches of Christ greet you” (Romans 16: 16). In the gospel we find heaven’s plan of salvation. Members of His church heard the gospel (Romans 10: 17), believed the gospel (Romans 10: 17), repented of their sins (Luke 13: 3, 5; Acts 17: 30), confessed their faith in Christ (Romans 10: 9), and were baptized for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2: 38; 1 Peter 3: 21). In the gospel we find the church worshipped according to the gospel (John 4: 23-24) on the first day of every week (Acts 20: 7) which consisted of preaching (2 Timothy 4: 2), singing (Ephesians 5: 19), prayer (Acts 2: 42), giving (1 Corinthians 16: 1), and the Lord’s Supper (Acts 20: 7; 1 Corinthians 11: 23-29). In the gospel the church lived righteous lives (Titus 2: 11-14). I pray your consideration of these important matters.

INTRODUCTION

The following is a compilation of scriptures given to the accuracy and proof of the deity of Christ. I send forth this information in the humblest disposition I can manifest. I am so appreciative of you giving me this opportunity to set forth what I believe the Bible teaches concerning Christ’s nature. These matters are of the upmost importance, and, are a matter of our soul salvation. As I often say, anything other than an understanding is a misunderstanding. And, it is vitally important that we not miss it! Please, via our conversation, keep an open and honest heart. Be willing to investigate. Examine all that is said in light of the scriptures. And may God bless your search to determine whether these things are so!

PROPHECY AND FULLFILMENT

In the book Of Isaiah, chapter 7: 14 we read, “Therefore, the lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

In the book of Matthew, chapter 1: 21-23 we read, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us, emphasis mine).”

WHAT ISAIAH SAW

In the book of Isaiah, chapter 6: 1, Isaiah goes into the temple the year that king Uzziah dies and sees the Lord sitting upon a throne. Concerning the angels, verse 3-5, says, “And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’” The phrase “Lord of hosts” in the Hebrew is Yahweh, i.e., Jehovah.

In the book of John chapter 12: 41 we read, “Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.” What things did Isaiah say? The things said in verses 38-40. When did Isaiah see his glory? In Isaiah chapter 6. Who did he see? Yahweh. Who is the context speaking about in John 12? Jesus. Therefore, when Isaiah saw Yahweh, he saw Jesus!

EEL GIBBOR

In Isaiah, chapter 9: 6 the Bible teaches us, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This no doubt is Messianic and refers to Christ. However, I understand that the reasoning of the Jehovah Witnesses is that Christ is here called “Mighty God” and not “Almighty God.”

It is interesting to note that Isaiah 10: 21 says, “A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.”  Verse 20 makes it plain that the “mighty God” of verse 21 is Jehovah—the Holy One of Israel. But, the Hebrew which is translated “mighty God” in Isaiah 10: 21 is exactly the same as that which is translated “mighty God” in Isaiah 9: 6. Thus, there is no distinction to be made! If “eel gibbor” refers to Jehovah in Isaiah 10: 21, how could it be argued that the same expression does not refer Jehovah in 9: 6? And if it refers to Jehovah in 9: 6—and it does—then the fact of the deity of Christ is established.

TRUTHS THAT CANNOT BE DENIED

 Isaiah urged God’s people to sanctify “Jehovah of hosts” (8: 12-14), a command applied to Jesus by Peter (1 Peter 3: 14-15). Furthermore, Isaiah’s “Jehovah” was to become a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence (8: 14), a description that New Testament writers applied to Christ (cf. Romans 9: 33, 1 Peter 2: 8). Isaiah foretold that John the Baptist would prepare the way for the coming of Jehovah (40: 3). We see this very fulfillment in Matthew 3: 3 and John 1: 23.

In Psalm 110: 1, we are told, “The Lord says to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” Jesus later explained that this verse pictures the Father addressing the Christ (Luke 20: 42).

The writer of Hebrews quoted the Father as addressing His Son in this way: “Of old you [Jehovah—Psalm 102: 25] laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Hebrews 1: 10). Not only does this verse apply the word “Jehovah” to Jesus, but it actually attributes the quotation to the mouth of God Himself!

AN EXEGETICAL TREATMENT OF JOHN 1: 1-3

The reading is: “In the beginning was the Word, and Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”

The first thing I would like to bring to your attention is the two-letter word “an.” This is translated “was” in John 1: 1. It is the imperfect indicative of the Greek “eimi,” which means “I am.” (I will have more to say on this in the section below entitled, “What Some Have Said”). The Greek imperfect tense denote continuous action or state of being in past time. Even in the beginning the Word “was”—continuous being in past time. This unequivocally proves that Christ was not created by God, but experienced continuous being even prior to the beginning!

At this point, I want to devote some time to the phrase “God” in John 1: 1. It is very interesting that the New World Translation (see my comments on the section, “A Brief Review of The New World Translation” below), inserts the indefinite article “a” before God. It reads, “a god.” This is the only translation (NWT) that I know of that does this. And if my understanding is correct, the justified reason is to do away with the deity of Christ.

However, the absence of the article is correct in the Greek. In the statement “and the Word was with God” the word “God” is preceded (in the Greek) by the definite article. In the statement “and the Word was God” the word “God” is not preceded by the definite article.

IN ESSENTIALS OF NEW TESTAMENT GREEK, Dr. Ray Summers has the following: “The basic function of the Greek article is to identify. At this point an important differentiation should be observed. When the article is used with construction, the thing emphasized is ‘identity’; when the article is not used the emphasized is quality of character. For example, ho nomos means “the law.” It points out a particular law and gives specific identity. nomos means ‘law’ in general…The difference is clearly seen the use of ho homos and theos. Ho theos is used of the divine Person ‘God.’ theos is used (generally) of the divine character or essence of God. Thus, “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God (ton theon) and the Word was divine (theos)’ gives the sense” (page 129).

In A MANUAL GRAMMAR OF THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT, Dana and Mantey have the following: “When identity is prominent, we find the article; and when quality or character is stressed, the construction is anarthrous…A study of the uses of the term as given in Moulton and Geden’s CONCORDANCE convinces one that without the article theos signifies divine essence, while with the article divine personality is chiefly in view…The use of theos in John 1: 1 is a good example. Pros ton theon points to Christ’s fellowship with the person of the Father; theos an ho logos emphasizes Christ’s participation in the essence of the divine nature. The former clearly applies to personality, while the later applies to character or essence…The articular construction emphasizes identity; anarthrous construction emphasizes character” (pages 138-140).

Now what is interesting is the inconsistency of the Witnesses in translating theos without the article. For example, the word “God”  (theos)—without the article—appears in John 1 in verses 6, 12, 13, and 18. In these verses they translate with the capital “G” and in no instance do they have “a god.” Why? Because they are bias in their treatment of Jesus as God! And the translation has to be made to fit their particular tenants of doctrine concerning Jesus and his deity!

CREATED OR CREATOR?

Paul, in Colossians 1: 15, refers to the Christ as being the “firstborn of all creation.” It is argued that this proves that Christ was a created being, and, therefore, not equal with God. But what proof is offered for concluding that the “firstborn of all creation” means that He was a created being? In the Greek word “prototokos” is inherent the notion of preeminence. And, the context certainly involves the preeminence of Christ (verse 18: “…that in everything he might be preeminent”). The Witnesses agree that Jehovah was involved in the creation. If it should be said of Him that He was “the preeminent one of all creation” it certainly would not be implied that He Himself was created. It would only imply that He was involved in (related to) the creation. The New Testament clearly teaches that God (Jehovah) was the direct force of the creation, and that Jesus Christ was the indirect agent of creation (John 1: 1-3; Colossians 1: 15-16). This is the force of the “dia” with the ablative case when related to “agency.” These verses in Colossians 1 plainly state that “…by him all things were created…all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (verses 16, 17). All things that were created were created by him—by means of the Christ. Now, please observe this logic. If He is a created being he had part in creating Himself. But, if he had part in creating Himself then He existed before he created Himself. And, if he existed before he created Himself he could not be a created being! Please read and reread over this again to see the force of this logic! In verse 17, Paul states, “…he is before all things…” THE NEW AMERICAN STANDARD has the note: “has existed prior to.” He existed prior to all things. It is therefore clear that Colossians 1: 15does not teach that Christ is a created being. It does teach that with regard to the whole creation—because of who He is—He is the preeminent one!

WHAT SOME HAVE SAID

Thomas. On the very day of the Lord’s resurrection He made an appearance to the disciples when Thomas was not present. The disciples told Thomas about the Lord’s appearance in their midst. Thomas said, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe” (John 20: 25).

After eight days the Lord again appeared to the disciples. This time Thomas was present. The Lord said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered: “My Lord and my God!” The Greek Testament says: “The Lord of me and the God of me.” There IS the DEFINITE ARTICLE immediately preceding the word “God.” And, therefore, even according to the “Witnesses” with respect to John 1: 1 the word “God” is a reference to Jehovah. Thomas was not only declaring the deity of Christ (John 20: 28), He called Him Jehovah!

Paul. In Titus 2: 13, Paul speaks of “…our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ…” Our great God and the Savior is clearly identified as being Jesus Christ.

Jesus. The deity of Christ is clearly established in what Jesus said about Himself! Jesus, in His public ministry, definitely claimed to be the Son of God (as in John 3: 18), and often called God His Father. The Jews understood plainly that in this claim He was claiming to be equal with Jehovah. Note carefully John 5: 18. “This is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” Pay close attention to the phrase, “equal with God!” Because he taught that He was the Son of God, and was, therefore equal with God the Father, the Jews accused Him of blasphemy! In John 10: 33 we have: “The Jews answered him, ‘It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.’” They accused Him of blasphemy because He said He was the “Son of God” (John 10: 36). If this claim to be the “Son of God” did not carry with it inherently the notion of equality with the Father, the Jews would not (could not) have accused Him of blasphemy! Note: The Jews held exactly the same view in this regard as is that held by the “Jehovah Witnesses”: they failed to recognize and to accept the fact that the claim to be the “Son of God” meant that He was equal with God the Father—that He was deity!

God. What does God the Father has to say about it? In Hebrews chapter 1, there is a discussion concerning Christ and His superiority over angels. (This proves He was not created an angel being He is superior over angels). God arrests our attention in verses 8-9 concerning Jesus. “But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” Please take note that God calls Jesus “God” in these passages. And the Hebrew is theos in the three citations of God!

A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE NEW WORLD TRANSLATION

It has been my studied conviction that the New World Translation, published by the Watchtower Society, is a biased translation of the Bible published to prove the peculiar teachings of the Watchtower Society, which they cannot prove by reference to the standard translations. I have already shown attempts of this very thing, (e.g., John 1: 1), and many other mistranslations could be cited. This version of the scriptures demonstrates several attempts to support so called “Jehovah Witnesses” doctrine, through erroneous translating and bias wording.

Take for example Paul’s discussion of the humility of Christ in Philippians 2: 5-8. “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped. But made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

In this reading we have:

1.      Reference to the Lord’s existence prior to His coming to live among men.

2.      The fact that He existed in the “form of God.”

3.      The fact of His being on equality with God.

4.      The fact that there came a time when He counted this equality not to be a thing to be grasped (held on to).

5.      That He emptied Himself of the form of God and took upon Himself of the form of man.

Clearly this, too, establishes the deity of Christ! However, the only thing that can be done by the “Witnesses” is to mistranslate. Verse 6 in their version reads this way: “…who, although he was existing in God’s form, gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God.”

Also, consider that in John 8:58, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am. So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.” Now, why would the Jews pick up stones to throw at Him? Because Jesus used an all familiar phrase to the Jews—“I Am!” Their familiarity with this phrase is especially remembered when God said to Moses in answer to who Moses should say sent him. He said to tell them, “I Am” have sent you! What was Jesus claiming when He uttered these words? The very thing the Jews understood Him to be saying—He is deity!

To get around the force of this, the New World Translation, renders Exodus 3: 14 this way: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘I SHALL PROVE TO BE has sent me to you’“(Exodus 3: 14, NWT), and “Most truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into existence, I have been” (John 8: 58, NWT). So, in the JW’s translation, Jesus’ words appear to have no connection with Exodus 3: 14.

Interestingly, their own study Bible prove that Jesus was claiming to be the I AM. Their 1984 large-print New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures with References has a footnote on Exodus 3: 14, admitting that the Hebrew would be rendered into Greek as “Ego eimi”—“I am.” And their 1985 Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures reveals that Jesus words in John 8: 58 are the same “ego eimi” (footnote), “I am” (interlinear text).  

This is sad and irresponsible exegesis. More could be cited, but I pray that this will suffice for now and give you an opportunity to peruse the information provided (Acts 17: 11).
